Petrography and trade names
Petrography describes and identifies a rock’s minerals, texture and structure, often using microscopy. It helps distinguish visually similar materials and interpret deterioration. Trade names may follow conventions different from geological classification: not every stone sold as “granite” is scientifically a granite. A petrographic description complements performance testing; it does not replace checks on the actual material being supplied.
